This product is used to drive hummingbirds into your yard by giving them a beacon, almost like a lighthouse off in the distance, that the hummingbirds can't resist.
You'll notice the red ribbon hanging from the bottom of the unit, but that is not the secret sauce. That is just there to blow in the wind and give the hummers something to think about.
The secret sauce is the special coating on the clear acrylic tube. You see hummingbirds, unlike you and I can see in the UV light range. Imagine seeing Red + UV, or Yellow +UV, or Blue+UV, you can't even imagine what that color looks like. But... Hummingbirds can not only "see" it, but they are also attracted to it.
The coating on the acrylic tube looks translucent to you, but to the hummingbird it looks like a giant "Hey, Come Over Here and Take a Look" sign!
